Post-exposure rabies vaccination for selected animal bites or scratches

DripToGo provides rabies vaccine support for selected exposure cases, especially after bites or scratches from animals with unclear rabies status, including stray or wild animals.

Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the nervous system and is usually transmitted through the saliva of infected mammals. Animals that may carry rabies include dogs, cats, monkeys, bats, and other mammals depending on the setting.

What to Do First After a Bite or Scratch

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal with possible rabies risk, wash the wound immediately with running water and soap for at least 15 minutes. Early wound washing is one of the most important first steps after exposure. Assessment should then be arranged as soon as possible.

Vaccine Schedule

Rabies vaccine is given as a series rather than a single dose.

For patients who have not had prior rabies vaccination, treatment usually begins on the day of exposure or as soon as possible afterward. Depending on the regimen used, the first visit may involve two injections or another dosing setup, followed by additional doses on later scheduled days.
If you have completed rabies vaccination before, the post-exposure schedule is usually shorter. The most appropriate plan should still be confirmed based on medical assessment and vaccination history.

When This May Be Considered

Rabies vaccination may be considered after:

  • bites or scratches from stray or wild animals
  • bites from animals with unclear vaccination status
  • exposure where rabies risk needs to be assessed

If rabies risk is possible, assessment should be arranged as soon as possible after the bite or scratch, ideally on the same day.

What Care May Include

For selected eligible cases, care may include:

  • wound assessment
  • basic wound cleaning and first aid
  • rabies vaccine when indicated
  • follow-up schedule guidance
  • referral advice if further treatment is required

The vaccine is usually given by injection in the upper arm.

If You Are Continuing the Schedule Abroad

Because rabies vaccination continues over several visits, some travelers may need to complete the remaining doses in their home country. This is often manageable, as equivalent modern rabies vaccines are widely available internationally.
DripToGo can provide a vaccination record and schedule guidance to help support continuation of care.

Important Information
  • This service supports selected post-exposure prevention. Severe wounds, heavy bleeding, major trauma, or injuries requiring urgent surgical care should be assessed promptly in a healthcare facility.
