What is tetanus?
Tetanus is a serious infection that can develop when bacteria enter the body through contaminated wounds. Because of this, proper wound care and timely post-exposure prevention are important after certain types of injuries.
When this service may be considered?
This service may be considered for selected cases such as:
- Dirty or contaminated wounds
- Puncture wounds
- Injuries involving dirty or rusted objects
- Wounds where tetanus risk needs to be assessed
Timing matters
If a wound may carry tetanus risk, assessment should be arranged as soon as possible after the injury. The longer a risky wound is left without proper cleaning and assessment, the less ideal the situation becomes for early prevention.
What care may include
For selected eligible cases, care may include:
- Wound assessment
- Basic wound cleaning and selected minor wound care
- Tetanus immunoglobulin when indicated
- Selected medicines or follow-up advice when needed
- Referral if further treatment is required
Important note
- Because this is a mobile service, wound care that can be provided outside of a clinic is limited to selected simpler cases. Severe wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, major trauma, or injuries requiring more advanced sterile treatment should be assessed promptly in a healthcare facility.
